We all know time flies. I’ve said it one million times in these blogs and written on how quickly a year can pass, especially when in a new situation, city, or job, spending those first months getting a rhythm, cruising through the middle portion, and then staring at the end of another 12-month cycle.
I’ve been busy…and not all that disciplined, hanging out with friends and family, traveling, working a few shifts a week, attending weddings most weekends, and trying to get that elusive uncle time.
I’ve not been at the keyboard nearly as consistently as I’d like.
Especially these last few weeks as I’ve gathered paperwork, got translations, and made appointments to secure my visa to Spain. On Tuesday, my brother Dylan and I cruised down to Chicago because the application must be submitted in person. It was quite stressful—and expensive—but I got it done and should be hearing back from them shortly.
And now that the visa weight has largely been lifted, I feel a new surge to get these final uncle posts done before I leave.
As mentioned, the blogs will continue when I’m gone. I’ve got quite a few drafts in the works that need some focus, effort, and time. They’ll keep sliding into inboxes on Saturday or Sunday even though I’ll be an ocean away.
The plan is to spend the school year there teaching English again while wrapping up the book proposal by the end of this year, hopefully getting it sold, and then following that up with a completed manuscript and book.
With more of a structured schedule and fewer obligations, I hope that in Spain I’ll be a bit more productive.
These days, in the work-vs-play balance, I’m leaning heavily in one direction, soaking up these last few weeks in the States, these final evenings with family, and the final sauna-swims of the summer.
There are four uncle posts to go.
And I’m hoping to sit down or call each of the eighteen for an ‘exit interview’ before I leave as well.
And I still have plans to meet a few of my father’s childhood friends.
The clock is ticking.
I gotta dial it in here.
Wish me luck.
And thanks for following the journey.
